Sedation Dentistry in North Dallas

A Comfort-Based Approach

We know that for some kids, a trip to the dentist feels like a mountain too high to climb. At Children’s Dentistry of North Dallas, we believe that all patients, no matter their age, deserve a pain and anxiety-free dental appointment. Whether it’s due to a previous experience, a naturally high level of anxiety, or sensory sensitivities, some kids need a little extra help to feel safe and relaxed. That is exactly why we offer specialized pediatric sedation dentistry.

Dental anxiety is a common fear, and it can be addressed through the use of sedation in dental practices. For mild or moderate anxiety, or even young age, simple nitrous oxide conscious sedation may be a good option, as it wears off entirely by the end of the visit. However, for younger children, or those with severe anxiety or a possible disability, we may recommend the use of deep-relaxation IV sedation, which is monitored directly by an anesthesiologist throughout the duration of the appointment. Prior to receiving any sedation, your child will be screened to ensure they are an eligible candidate. We understand that the word “sedation” can be intimidating to parents. Our team is highly trained in pediatric-specific safety protocols. Our goal is to both fix teeth and protect your child’s emotional wellbeing to ensure they grow up without fear of the dentist.

You are your child’s biggest advocate. We walk you through every step of the pre-sedation instructions, what to expect during the procedure, and post-care recovery so that you feel as confident and calm as your child will. By ensuring a painless, stress-free visit, we are preventing the development of dental phobias that could carry into adulthood. We want your child to walk out from our office with a high-five, a prize and sticker, and the realization that taking care of their smile is nothing to be afraid of.

If your child feels anxious about their treatment, nitrous oxide can make the experience less overwhelming. Commonly known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide has been a staple in the dental field for many years. This type of sedation is done through a small mask placed over your child’s nose, allowing them to stay conscious, but ease mild to moderate anxiety. At the end of the appointment, all effects of nitrous oxide will disappear, and your child will be able to resume their normal activities.

Why Parents and Kids Love It

Quick Onset: Your child will feel the calming affects within minutes of putting on the mask.

Safety First: Your child remains fully awake and able to communicate with our team throughout the entire visit. They simply feel more relaxed and distanced from the sounds and sensations of the dental tools.

Rapid Recovery: One of the biggest perks of nitrous oxide is that it wears off almost immediately. Once the procedure is over, we switch the gas to oxygen for few minutes, and your child will be back to their normal self before they even leave the dental chair.

Nitrous oxide is an excellent option for children with anxiety, strong gag reflexes, or for shorter procedures. Our experienced team will walk you through everything you can expect, addressing any concerns you may have beforehand.

For patients who may require an additional level of sedation due to age, anxiety, or disability, IV sedation may be a good option. This offers a deep level of relaxation as medication is administered through an IV prior to treatment. Your child is monitored at all times by an anesthesiologist and is screened prior to receiving sedation to ensure they are a good fit.

When it comes to IV sedation, your child’s safety is our absolute priority. We partner with board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists who come directly to our office. While our dental team focuses on your child’s smile, the anesthesiologist focuses entirely on your child’s vitals and comfort level, providing hospital-grade monitoring in the comfort of a familiar office environment.

During IV sedation, your child will not feel any pain, and they won’t remember the sounds and sensations of the appointment. They wake up with a healthy smile and no scary memories.
